Barechaharia Bhowna and Sonit Konwar Gajen Barua

Late Sonitkownar Gajen Barua of Jamugurihat was one of the pioneer of folk culture of Assam. Within a short life period of 62 years (1915 to 1977), this great performing artist has rendered invaluable services towards development of art and folk culture throughout the state to national level. His endeavour to assimilate the people of Assam valley and the neighbouring hill people has materialized into a harmonious and lifelong cultural exchanges.

His unique sense of creativity and foresightedness is responsible for giving Barechaharia Bhowna a different identity and distinctness from amongst the vast field of San kari art and culture. Late Barua has created glorious oil painting featuring every aspects of Barechaharia Bhowna and the blossoming lotus shaped pandal which has gained wide acclamation in the literary and artistic society. He was associated with literary doyens like Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha, Natasurya Phani Sarma, Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Luitkonwar Rudra Barua and many other great geniuses.
